Here's the basic time line I wrote for the Revolution Setting back in '07. Obviously, some things didn't happen quite the same. Just go with it...
2009:
Iraq continues to be instable and incapable of self-government with US military presence.
i. Declared a “US Military-Protectorate Territory”. There is no more “self” government.
ii. Troops from global bases in allied countries are sent to Iraq in small amounts.
Organized terrorist attack in Washington DC. 2 suicide bombers covered by a sharpshooter make a run toward the White house. Although they were stopped, 9 people were killed, 20 injured. (not including the terrorists)
i. Authoritarian rule increases. Less liberties on privacy. War popularity goes up, slightly.
Parties and Interest groups are pushing too many agendas. Extreme confusion, and lack of caring about politics among the general populace.
i. A clever, aspiring politician (John Davian) forms a “Reform” party and platform, initiating a media blitz campaign this year to get his name out; and runs for senator (currently House Representative- for California)
2010:
Davian wins the senator position. Very charismatic and resourceful, and only 35 years old. People enjoy his fresh approaches.
Minor economic recession.
Tensions between Iran and the US increase, over Iraq.
i. OPEC threaten economic sanctions if the US does not honor the treaty to rebuild Iraq and leave; and also not to provoke Iran (it has made no threats, really)
1. US talks with them, nothing really accomplished, however.
Aresium discovered
2011:
A minor attack on US troops by terrorists lead the US to Iran as the ‘culprit’.
i. It is used to ignore OPEC’s threats.
European countries threaten to leave the coalition entirely when a US general is recorded making an insulting remark about Europe not contributing anything.
i. Europe advises that the US withdraw from the Middle East, yet US remains its crusader-ideals. Welcomes Europe to leave completely, which they do.
2012:
Davian is Vice-President at the Presidential Election. Although he runs with his ‘reform’ platform, the president is Republican. They say they are going to “clean up this mess previous administrations made.”
A more democratic Russia gets heavily involved in the Middle East, originally as an additional member of the coalition.
i. US welcomes their former enemy, and new friend with open arms.
A “Conflict Resolution Conference” in October is held in Iran, and headed by the US president, Russian Premier, and Iranian Shah.
i. On the second day of it, Terrorists attack. The President and the Premier are killed, and the Shah is wounded, but escapes intact. Over 25 dead and 40 injured, including the attackers.
1. “Black October”, as the event is known, was the most successful national-leader assassination mission in modern history. A retro-fitted and maintained WW2 German Afrika Korps “Tiger” Tank was hidden, and supported by a van with a handful of gunmen. It attacked until it was immobilized by an airstrike from a nearby carrier. The tank was not completely destroyed, as it chased the targets inside the palace. There was high collateral damage from the airstrike, but the USAF reported it had no choice, and received the go-ahead.
ii. Davian is now President, and “reluctantly” takes (extreme) power. He enacts many emergency executive orders, PATRIOT-style acts.
1. He blames Iran for poor security measures, and not allowing the US to provide reasonable military support/protection. Iran says it takes no responsibility, and this was virtually unpredictable. Threats go back and forth, and the US declares war a minute before Iran does.
2. OPEC and the EU act against this, attempting to stall/resolve the conflict with economic sanctions, and threats thereof. US merely delays a full-scale invasion. OPEC raises prices of oil to US, as they ignore Iran’s attempts to resolve.
a. The Iranian Shah is assassinated (CIA suspected. No evidence however). A more passive leader takes his place.
Large amounts of Aresium are brought back from Mars.
2013:
US holds invasion to build forces.
A low-yield nuclear weapon detonates when being transported in Northern California. ~9,000 people were killed, with ~20,000 afflicted/injured afterward. 12 sq. miles destroyed, including the fires and the blast.
i. Declared a “terrorist attack”, conducted by a sole traitor- Edgar Smith. Smith seems to have been slightly off his rocker.
US government blames relaxed domestic security. Authoritarian rule increases.
US troops in other bases around the world are shifted toward Iran.
Oil prices skyrocket.
2014:
Bills pass to resolve the economic recession. Increased domestic production, government control of business/manufacturing, and decreased foreign reliance.
i. Massive inflation of US currency.
Oil prices continue to soar from the year before.
i. Mass-transit systems and social-programs have their funding increased. Government buys cars, and has incentives to decrease car production.
Gateway project to Demeter is started.
Cleanup of the blast from the nuclear attack in California is complete due to advances in “Green” technologies.
2015:
Europe demands that payment of US debts be paid. (US is at a $10 trillion debt to Europe alone; including Europe’s debts factored in)
i. Refuses to loan the US government anymore money, when the US says that the “debts will be paid when they are payable”.
1. US trades with mostly just Japan, China and Russia (as the major ones). They want money too, but are willing to give the US more time. (due to domestic issues)
Europe sells old/obsolete military equipment to other nations during upgrading their militaries. Iran and nearby Middle East countries purchase them enmasse.
i. The US criticizes them for supporting terrorists. Europe responds with such conflicts as WWI, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran-Iraq, etc. US then just says ‘meh’, and-
Invasion of Iran. (skirmishes around and outside before. Iran pushed into Iraq briefly)
i. US military sweeps through, but with high losses (compared to previous modern wars)
ii. Iranian military structure is destroyed. A small nuclear weapon is detonated at the US military (no civilian casualties). US withdraws ground troops from most of Iran, falling back to the edges and encircling Iran.
Construction of Metropolis starts in the wasteland that was the nuclear attack. Construction companies flock enmasse to set up shop there, and the government issues many incentives for people to move there.
2016:
Davian is re-elected by a huge majority.
Russian people are in (relatively minor) discontent with their government.
Electric Eye network goes live, and the US sieges Iran from air and space.
i. Iranian military remnants go underground, the government resigns; but not before telling the people to revolt against their oppressors.
ii. Iran-US war “won”, as troops move in and occupy territory. Intense conflict, with high casualties.
iii. US initiates the Draft. Hostilities intensify.
US Marines are merged with NASA, and are chosen for space colonization
i. Gateway project to Demeter is completed successfully.
ii. Gateway project to Mars is started.
iii. VCS and deep-space communications are developed.
2017:
US people express some discontent, but protests are skooshed.
A government (loyal to US) is set up in Iran, and the military occupies only key strategic areas (naval/air bases, and oil fields)
Europe expresses a demand for debt payments.
i. China says it cannot loan anymore until paid.
ii. Russia does not demand, but requests some payment/aid soon.
1. Russian premier assassinated, Kremlin bombed.
2. Government collapses, total chaos and anarchy.
US can’t pay.
i. Europe forces the withdrawal of US troops, bases, and personnel from its borders. Embassies closed. Uses taken equipment as minor payment, similar to a ‘repo depot’
1. US only agrees to this because the Congress overrides the president. They request that the repo’d stuff “hold them over” for a few years.
a. Europe grudgingly agrees. Situation was tense, but no casualties.
US enacts bills/acts that initiate a quick-phase massive economic reform.
Gateway to Mars is built successfully.
2018:
Minor operations in the “War on Terror”, and suppressing the revolt in Iran, and Iraq.
Protestors of the War gain a hand in Washington, corporations cut funds to war.
i. Draft ends.
ii. US says “Conflict in the Middle East has been resolved”, and troops are slowly withdrawn from Iran/Iraq (not entirely, though. Still some bases). Statistics:
1. US (alone) lost 123,000 in both Iran/Iraq, since 2003 (mostly in Iran)
2. 7% of Iran’s population killed in wartime (4.9 million, since 2012. In 2006, Iran’s population was 70.47 million)
3. 45% of Iraq’s population killed in wartime (11.7 million, since 2003. Before then, population was at 26 million)
World leaders commend US for finally withdrawing.
Satellites and probes are sent to Demeter. An orbital station for that planet is beginning construction.
New propulsion system and techniques are developed to make exiting Earth easier.
2019:
Current Exchange rate: 1.00 USD = .65 Euro
Europe falls into a minor recession
Trade reopens with the US
Oil still at high prices, comparable to $6.00/gallon now. There is significantly less reliance on it however, as most cars are more efficient.
US is now a good exporter/creditor, versus the importer/debtor of the past.
Currency is still inflated/low value though, as there is a huge flood of it coming on the market.
Not tons of US-Euro trade, so there is not a very high demand.
US builds first space vessel of war, the Ares-1 (Primary function: planetary attack. Large capital ship style).
Reports of domestic terrorism from media-dubbed “Anarchists” begin to happen in the California/Oregon/Washington areas
2020:
Iran/Iraq/OPECs and nearby Middle East, and some African countries form a minor peace-alliance, called the Coalition of Allied Arabs (CAA)
US is still highly authoritarian, as President Davian is re-elected again. (2nd election, 3rd term)
Iran/Iraq rebuilding funds from the US continue to come, but lessen in amount, ending in 2022.
The Demeter’s orbital space station is completed, and sent. Successful in its deployment, scientists and researchers are placed in it by the end of the year.
Towards winter, the CAA forms into the “Arabian Defense Empire” (ADE), uniting as a economic and military alliance. They begin to prosper and develop into a highly modernized land, rapidly developing.
The European Union Space Exploration Coalition (EUSEC) upgrades their existing space station to be more habitable, larger, and armed/armored.
2021:
US population expresses some discontent, despite government suppression (~20%)
Military fortifies its bases in the Middle East.
A series of cases, US Marines vs. Detainees comes into the spotlight. (Soldiers are accused of abusing prisoners and detainees) The Supreme Court rules in favor of the Marines.
Population expresses more discontent, and riots break out in NY and Miami (where many detainees were from). They last for about 3 days before martial law is declared. Lasts for ~1 more week before fully suppressed. Roughly 50 dead, and unknown number injured between the two cities during those 10 days. (No military deaths, some wounded however.)
July: A Colony Team is sent to Demeter, and establishes a small town of buildings.
China finishes a space station, and although it’s a manufacturing station, it’s battle-ready. It then produces small, star-fighters (non-atmospheric)
Domestic terrorism attacks by these so called Anarchists increase, but little information is known about them. Their campaign of destruction is mostly focused towards government buildings and personnel.
2022:
President/Congress are opposing parties (Progressive/Reform)
Spending reduces slightly, but Davian manipulates the system well. Reduces costs and funding of things he’s against, to continue to support his platform’s ideals.
Anarchist attacks increase drastically, and it is discovered that they are much more well-trained and well-equipped than an armed militia. Their source however, is still unknown.
Not a dime goes to repay debts. Foreign aid is cut.
Campaign begins in March.
The Demeter colony will lose contact for 3 months, starting in May, due to both planets’ stars being in the path of the gateway.
2009:
Iraq continues to be instable and incapable of self-government with US military presence.
i. Declared a “US Military-Protectorate Territory”. There is no more “self” government.
ii. Troops from global bases in allied countries are sent to Iraq in small amounts.
